This page walks you through the sheriff, the city police, and the steps to ask for a 24 hour booking sheet.
Prairie County 24 Hour Booking Overview
Prairie County Sheriff and 24 Hour Booking
The Prairie County Sheriff's Office is the main spot for 24 hour booking records. The office sits at 200 Courthouse Square in Des Arc, AR 72040. The phone is (870) 256-4137. The fax line runs at (870) 256-5033. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The jail staff work around the clock. Booking in take can happen at any hour, day or night.
When a person is booked into the Prairie County jail, the staff logs a full set of facts. The booking number, the booking date and time, the name, the date of birth, the race, the sex, the height, the weight, and the address all go into the file. The charge list is tied to Arkansas Code cites. Bond gets added once a judge sets it. A mugshot is taken at in take.
The basic booking sheet is a public record under Ark. Code Ann. § 25-19-103. The sheriff is the custodian. Under Ark. Code Ann. § 25-19-105, the sheriff has three business days to respond to a FOIA request. Copy fees are capped at 25 cents per page under Ark. Code Ann. § 25-19-105(d).
Des Arc and Hazen Police Records
Two city police forces work in Prairie County. Des Arc Police Department sits in the county seat. The phone is (870) 256-4313. Hazen Police Department covers the city of Hazen in the south district. The line is (870) 255-4541. Each department makes its own arrests. The booking itself is done at the county jail. So Des Arc PD and Hazen PD do not run their own jails.
If you want the arrest report from a city case, ask the city department. Each department is its own custodian under the Arkansas FOIA. The same three business day rule and 25 cent per page cap apply. Each city has one records clerk most of the time, so phone calls on weekdays during office hours tend to get the best response.
Note: Des Arc sits in the north district of Prairie County. Hazen sits in the south district. Both feed the same county jail.
Online Tools for Prairie County Booking
Prairie County cases may show up on the state court search site. Once a charge is filed, the docket can appear on Arkansas CourtConnect the next business day. CourtConnect is free to use. The tool shows the case style, the filing date, the charge code, the judge, and the next court date. It does not show the booking sheet or the mugshot.
The state search page is shown below.
If a Prairie County case is not on CourtConnect, you can get case info from the Circuit Clerk at the courthouse in Des Arc. The Circuit Clerk has a file on every charge that comes out of a booking.
For custody alerts across Arkansas jails, VINELink is the free tool. Sign up on the site and it will send alerts on a person's custody status. VINE covers most mid to large Arkansas jails. Small rural jails may not feed all data, so call the sheriff to confirm.
How to Request a Booking Record in Prairie County
The Arkansas FOIA is the law that opens booking sheets, mugshots, and charge lists to the public. Ark. Code Ann. § 25-19-101 starts the chapter. The FOIA Handbook from the Attorney General is the best guide for the full rule. The Handbook spells out what is open and what is not.
To file a request, send a short note to the sheriff or the city department that holds the file. Give the full name of the person, the date of birth if known, and the booking date. Say which files you want. The custodian has three business days to respond. The fee is 25 cents per page for paper copies. Staff time cannot be billed.
If the request is denied, Ark. Code Ann. § 25-19-107 lets you sue in circuit court. The judge can rule fast. The court can make the agency pay your fees if you win. Juvenile records are closed under Ark. Code Ann. § 9-27-309. The Attorney General FOIA page has sample letters and a hotline at (501) 682-2007.
What a Prairie County Booking Record Holds
The booking record fields in Prairie County are the same as those in most Arkansas jails. The full name, the date of birth, the sex, the race, the height, and the weight all go in. The address of record, the arresting agency, the charge list with Arkansas Code cites, and the bond amount are next. A mugshot is taken at in take.
Mugshots of adults are public records. The FOIA Handbook says plainly: "Mug shots are public records." Juvenile mugshots are not public. Medical screens and social security numbers are redacted. Open investigation files may be held back for a time while a case is live.
A hold on a booking sheet means the person waits for a court date or for another agency to take custody. A federal hold, a state parole hold, or a warrant from another state all count. Bond types include cash, surety, property, and own recognizance. A judge or the rules of the local court set the amount. Most people post bond within a day or two of in take.
Related State and Federal Searches
A few statewide tools fill in the story beyond a 24 hour booking. The Arkansas Department of Corrections inmate search covers state prison only. The ADC page makes clear that they do not track city or county jail detainees.
The Arkansas Division of Community Correction has a public parole and probation search. The Arkansas Sex Offender Registry shows names, photos, and prior offenses for people who must register under state law. The Arkansas Crime Information Center runs a name based criminal history search for $22. The Arkansas Counties Association directory points to each county sheriff site in the state.
Note: Prairie County has two district courts, one in Des Arc and one in Hazen. The booking still happens at the main county jail.
